My first trek was to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Pretty nice, though not of the same caliber as the very best aquariums (aquaria?). As the name implies, this aquarium focuses exclusively on sea life in the Pacific Ocean, and the exhibits are divided into 3 sections representing different ecosystems of the Pacific.
The aquarium didn't have many large animals, except for a couple sharks, seals, and sea lions. But the smaller displays were terrific and contained some unusual things that I hadn't seen before, such as "sea apples". And they had a wonderful display of mudskippers, my favorite fish! (If you haven't seen them before, they are fish that walk and sit on land, literally! The aquarium had a whole bunch of 'em mostly sitting around on rocks, with a few walking around (they have a floppy gait reminiscent of sea lions).
